Innovative Victorian kids headed for Silicon Valley

Smart stickers for greener buildings
DIY box-set to teach electronics and programming skills
And a virtual reality travel guide that lets you shop in Italy from the couch.

On Saturday the schoolkids behind these three projects pitched their ideas to industry.

And the winning team, who are marketing the DIY box sets, will head to Silicon Valley in January with all expenses paid—visiting Google and other high-tech companies.

It’s the first time Australia has run the TiE Young Entrepreneurs competition – a program designed to teach entrepreneurship and business skills to high school students through practical experience and mentoring.

The students behind these projects, aged between 12 and 17, come from: Box Hill High School; Auburn High School; Mount Waverley Secondary College; Aquinas College; Notre Dame College in Shepparton; and Weeroona College Bendigo.

Breeding mosquitoes; turning Aussie wheat into Indonesian exports; connecting land and sea; the first 1,000 days of life

Today in Surabaya, the third Indonesia-Australia Research Summit discusses research to change lives, including:

What happens when islands and remote communities get electricity? How does 24/7 power change families, businesses, and hierarchies?
Families hatching and releasing mosquitoes to fight dengue
Joint competitive advantage – working together to build our economies
- Australian wheat becomes Indonesian noodles for global export
- Australian cotton and rayon transform into Indonesian fashion exports

Ports that work; saving children’s lives; water smart cities and more

Today in Surabaya, the 3^rd Indonesia-Australia Research Summit with research to change lives including:

Making ports that work with rail, road, and the surrounding communities
Could vitamin D reduce child deaths?
Designing the coolest and most energy-efficient tropical houses
What do children learn about diet and nutrition on the street: from advertising to school posters and street rubbish?
How do island and remote communities change with access to 24/7 power?

These are some of the challenges being tackled by researchers from 11 Indonesian and Australian universities meeting today and tomorrow in Surabaya for the 3^rd Indonesia-Australia Research Summit.

Highlights from Day 8 of National Science Week

It’s the penultimate day of Science Week’s nine-day week with 790 events and activities, and dozens of great stories and talent, including:

Brisbane: Superbugs, sea level rise, baby stress, and seabird conservation: Soapbox Science spruiks discoveries in King George Square.

Sydney:

Fossils, safeguarded seeds at the Australian PlantBank, and face-to-face with a virtual reality dinosaur – all at Mount Annan’s Jurassic Garden.
Build an ATLAS particle detector with LEGO to reveal its engineering – continues Sunday.
What can science and Indigenous knowledge tell us about the secret life of eels?

30,000 people identify 800,000 animals – Australia’s online wildlife census is working!

Scientists are thanking the 30,000 Australians who have gone online and spotted more than 800,000 animals in 680,000 images through the ABC’s Wildlife Spotter project, helping scientists monitor Australia’s wildlife, their predators and pests.

But there’s still more work to be done, with hundreds of thousands of pictures of animals taken by automated ‘camera traps’ needing to be done.

“You’re helping us save bandicoots and other animals,” says Deakin University ecologist Euan Ritchie. “And you’re literally saving us years of work, so we can get ahead with understanding and protecting our wildlife.”
